Storage Administrator (NAS)
Role
Responsible for storage environments which consist of McData/Brocade fabrics and EMC2’s Celerra family NAS headers and Clariion family storage arrays. Support ongoing management and operational activities to include upgrades, problem resolution and change activities. Responsible for configuration planning, integration and implementation of Storage solutions.
Tasks
• Provide continuous support for customer base needing changes to leveraged NAS allocations.
• Provide Problem and Incident Management support for NAS management software, storage arrays and fabric.
• Perform SLA and billing reporting.
• Perform NAS Health Checks, interpret results, and define corrective actions.
• Develop and implement Business Continuity and Remote Data Replication solutions.
• Interface directly with Vendor Assistance Centre on all issues affecting the leveraged environment and its customers.
• Maintain Storage Services Management tools and process (SSMSv2).
• Strategize on future requirements, needs, and position of all leveraged NAS resources.
• Support and define procurement requirements of NAS infrastructure.
• Participate in TSRs (Technical Solution Reviews).
• Provide NAS Consultation.
• Develop new processes and procedures.
• Perform vendor Professional Services functions.
• Support new business projects, coordinate solutions.
• Support new business pursuits.
Skills
• Analyze and interpret NAS requirements
Work with business planners, Portfolio Management, suppliers, and technical personnel to fully understand business NAS requirements and map to specific technologies and configuration and implementation capabilities.
• Articulate NAS capabilities
1. Articulate an in-depth awareness of NAS products, services, delivery processes and the ways in which they address client needs.
2. Apply broad-based, working knowledge of NAS applications and how these applications can be utilized and integrated to support client requirements. Seek out and leverage subject matter expertise for any given NAS solutions to support new NAS opportunities.
• Articulate NAS direction to others
Communicate strategic direction and business requirements to NAS suppliers and partners.
• Conduct root cause analysis
1. Determine the root cause of a problem or opportunity and evaluate the costs and benefits of the alternatives in order to select the best solution.
2. Determine why organizations are unable to meet their strategic business goals. Analyze gap analysis data to determine underlying performance issues. (Note: root cause analysis may be applied both in cases of technological problems as well as human performance problems.)
• Conduct NAS assessments
Assess NAS infrastructure in terms of its ability to meet the current and future NAS objectives and strategic direction. Provide a comprehensive report of the assessment to the client.
• Conduct NAS capacity planning
Define capacity criteria and forecast NAS utilization (using the output of performance measurement) in order to initiate and manage capacity plans. Monitor and manage useable NAS resources at established levels. Engage in planning for new NAS equipment in order to maintain acceptable service levels. Based on business growth, customer needs, system connectivity understanding and industry insight, formulate recommendations for the NAS environment. Perform the functions of collecting, maintaining, reporting on, and trending measurements of NAS resource utilization at predetermined intervals in order to forecast shortages and take preventive action.
• Conduct NAS infrastructure research
Research technical environment and infrastructure needs. Compile data into logical groupings and provide summary of findings.
• Define NAS migration recovery plan
Incorporate recovery plan into migration strategy. Determine recovery strategy for system components to ensure business continuity.
• Deliver technical presentations
Utilize state-of-the-art, best-in-class tools, techniques, and methods to deliver technical presentations to peers, leadership team, sales executives, clients, prospects, etc. Leverage communication tools and templates, branding, and style guidelines in all materials.
• Design and develop NAS solutions
Apply knowledge of NAS and Backup and Recovery solutions to design and develop NAS solutions.
• Design technical NAS solutions
Evaluate existing technical NAS environment to determine how well it can support known system requirements. If necessary, provide input to the design or design new technical NAS environment that supports the client"s business needs using appropriate methods and processes. Apply in-depth industry knowledge, experience, and business metrics to determine how technology can add value to the client"s NAS requirements.
• Develop solution to client NAS requirements
Actively incorporate the client specific requirements into the overall NAS solution. Apply knowledge of how storage capabilities can be utilized and integrated to support business requirements. Leverage subject matter experts for specific capabilities to support business opportunities.
• Develop NAS contingency plans
Design and develop NAS contingency plans, and associated training plan to ensure business continuity.
• Develop NAS future state vision
Identify changes needed to improve NAS solutions and how the proposed changes will provide value and support the strategic objectives. Develop vision of desired state and plan the strategies to achieve goals. Align sponsorship and transition strategies.
• Develop NAS implementation and migration strategy
1. Define an implementation strategy including a migration plan to get from the as is to the desired state.
2. Apply knowledge of the process of evaluating applications to develop a conversion, integration, or migration strategy. Use tools to understand the complexity and quality of existing NAS solution to understand the effort involved to change the environment.
3. Develop a transition or migration plan for NAS upgrades and new versions of storage tools to maintain optimal work environment availability. Develop a deployment plan (schedules, training, actual use, etc.) to make the specified tool/method available for use.
4. Work with WAN/Network Engineering to determine and develop bandwidth requirements for migration activities. Ensure that the pipe is big enough to handle data being migrated and size accordingly.
• Develop NAS performance models
Use appropriate prototypes and simulation tools to model the performance of NAS environment.
• Establish NAS size and configure platforms
Size and configure NAS platforms to meet client requirements.
• Establish and maintain NAS test environment
Set up and maintain a NAS test environment that closely simulates the production environment.
• Estimate cost of NAS solutions
Work with sales and financial representatives to develop a comprehensive cost estimate of the proposed NAS solution.
• Evaluate NAS tools and technologies
Work with available tools and processes to evaluate new and existing technologies to ensure that they meet a minimum NAS requirement prior to proposing for a template.
• Evaluate and select technical NAS solutions
Evaluate and select the most appropriate technical NAS solutions from among a variety of choices.
• Identify opportunities for NAS reengineering
