About Embedded Systems Innovation by TNO (TNO-ESI)
TNO-ESI is an open innovation research group with strong partnerships with industry-leading high-tech companies. TNO-ESI focusses on the development of new methods and techniques for system design and engineering. Its extensive research programme aims to advance high-tech industry in improving lead-time and effectiveness of their product innovation process, as well as the functionality and quality of their products. In addition, TNO-ESI provides specific programmes for innovation support and competence development of system architects and senior engineers.

The TNO-ESI strategic research programme focuses on the development of latest techniques for design and engineering of high-tech (embedded) systems and applications within a rapidly changing technology environment. We concentrate on four key lines of innovation: system performance, system quality & reliability, future-proof systems and systems-in-context. The dedicated TNO-ESI competence development programme supports system architects and industrial engineers in developing their professional skills.

In the TNO-ESI research programme, multi-disciplinary teams of experts of renowned (multi)national high-tech enterprises, SMEs, and leading academic research groups work together on the latest technologies and innovations. This allows fundamental research results to be directly linked to industrial application. The TNO-ESI network represents a unique platform for open innovation that facilitates research cooperation and knowledge exchange across stakeholders.

Originally founded in 2002, the former Embedded Systems Institute was integrated in TNO in January 2013 as the research group Embedded Systems Innovation by TNO (TNO-ESI). Its (founding) partners are industry-leading companies ASML, NXP, Océ, Philips, Thales and TNO, along with Delft University of Technology, Radboud University and Eindhoven University of Technology.

Your experience and interests
You have an engineering degree (e.g. computer science, electrical engineering, physics) at academic level, with a relevant professional background, working in- or with high-tech industry with particular experience in managing applied research or product innovation projects.
You are a goal-oriented self-driving professional, illustrating a high level of personal responsibility to deliver quality results. You enjoy to coordinate multidisciplinary teams of research fellows, product innovation specialists and academic scientists who develop new methods and techniques for design and engineering of complex high-tech systems. You operate both on the conceptual and operational level, creating structure and overview in programs and projects, while taking responsibility for the project proposals & plans (both in national and international context), and the project’s results, quality, cost and time.
In your management approach, you align the project with the client’s management team where, preferably, you have built up a track record in influencing business decisions and directions, based on your technological insight and personality.

You are a team player that enjoys working in a multidisciplinary team of TNO-ESI research fellows, industrial and academic partners, guiding the research specialists in their work and closely cooperating with the client’s product development teams at their customer premises. Above all you are person a that we can build on to guide our customer and our own staff successfully through its journey.

Your role
As a program/project manager, you coordinate a portfolio of projects in the areas of applied research, focusing on coordinating key client accounts and achieving high-impact project results that align with the TNO-ESI objectives and the client’s innovation needs.
You will lead one or more strategic research teams that focus on the development of latest techniques for architecting, design and design-space exploration of complex software-intensive high-tech systems. The objective of these projects is to obtain full insight in system-level functionality, behavior and performance at the earliest possible product development stage, thereby significantly improving the risks, costs and time of the innovation project.

Lead partners are the leading high-tech OEM industries in The Netherlands or Europe. The close cooperation with these partners creates a challenging operating environment in which many different design disciplines are involved to create latest innovative products. As leader of the project team you will have a very regular presence at the client’s premises.
