DevOps Engineer

Our organization in The Hague is providing network infrastructure services to one of the largest oil and gas enterprises in the world. In order to manage these services, a large collection of network management systems and applications needs to be continuously maintained and expanded. This management suite consists of a combination of commercially available systems and custom developed middleware and applications. The middleware provides the glue between various administrative, network management and business reporting systems.

The custom built middleware, and the (web) applications and interfaces relying on it, consist of a variety of technologies and platforms, but mainly Apache, MySQL, Perl, LDAP, Oracle running on RedHat Linux and Windows platforms. Additionally there are also systems and applications relying on Wintel platforms like .Net, SQL Server, Internet Information Server, Office Communication Server and Active Directory.

The DevOps engineer is in charge of providing and supporting an extensive suite of monitoring tools and reporting services for the Telecommunications Infrastructure. The main focus of this role is the “run and maintain” of existing tools and reports, and in some cases the rollout or modification of systems and applications that cater for the ever ongoing expansion of the existing infrastructure.

Summary of essential job functions

• Running and maintaining the Network Service Management Tools infrastructure used for Network Management, data collection and reporting;

• Safeguarding the integrity of the reporting infrastructure (databases, web portal and a set of customized tools and utilities written in Perl);

• Embedding of new tools/reporting solutions in the day-to-day run and maintain activities of the team;

• Development of scripts and small applications in this environment;

• Participate in a 24x7 call out schedule;

• Reviewing documentation during the handover and acceptance process for new systems and applications;

• Sharing knowledge and experience;

• Participate in development projects to safeguard infrastructure stability and availability during design and deployment of new software.

Minimum requirements, education

• Bachelors in Computer Sciences or Major course work in Information Technology, Telecommunications, Data communications;

• Further qualifications or certifications in IT will be advantageous especially in relation to IP networking (Cisco) or network management systems.

Experience required

• In depth knowledge on MySQL / Perl, Linux/Unix, CVS, GIT and Apache;

• System administration experience on Windows (2008/20012) server and Linux/Unix;

• Strong team player with the ability to initiate and maintain strong relationships with other sub-process peers.

Preferred

• Knowledge of ITIL processes, especially Problem and Incident Management;

• Knowledge of working in a DevOps arrangement, working closely with developers in a fast moving environment;

• Systems and Network management background;

• Technical knowledge of Network Management Systems, network protocols, especially SNMP;

• Experience in LDAP and/or Microsoft AD is a definite plus;

• Knowledge about in Cisco WAN routing & LAN switching.
